From the immense, at times frightening, beauty of the island of Capri, Russian writer and playwright Maksim Gor'kij speaks of it in 1913, telling in his "Eroica":
"The island sleeps in austere silence: the sea also sleeps, as if dead. It seems that from above a powerful hand has cast into it this brown and strange rock, killing its life. Looking at it from the sea, and just where the golden arc of the Milky Way touches the black water, the island shows itself as a phenomenal beast, with a monstrous forehead, which curved its hirsute back, laps the sea with its huge throat, silently drinking its water as smooth and flat as oil."
