In one of his numerous trips, the historian Ferdinand Gregorovius visited Capri and remained fascinated by it. Among the magical atmosphere of the island reported in his essay "Italian Walks", he wrote of the Grotta di Matermania:
"The romantic and wild location of the cave, the ruins of the ancient temple, the mystical cult of Mitra, the deep silence, the twilight, the dripping of water drop by drop, and finally the wonderful view of the sea and the countryside, everything contributes to producing a deep impression of mystery."
